Devvarman, the No. 3 seed, is playing his first tournament in Charlottesville as a pro. He beat former Baylor player Denes Lukacs of Hungary 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 in the ATP Challenger event after van der Merwe ousted his doubles partner, fellow South African Raven Klaasen, 6-4, 6-4.
Sanam Singh, a current Cavalier, has won four matches -- three in qualifying -- to reach a second-rounder against Scoville Jenkins.
Because the ATP fines players who pull out of events, Singh will not be able to join his U.Va. teammates in the ITA National Indoor Championships, which begin Thursday in New Haven, Conn.
