AirTran adding new service to Dallas; partnership to serve six other cities

Nov 05, 2009 (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- LUV | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- AirTran Airways, the second-largest airline at Mitchell International Airport, will add new service to Dallas, and it is entering a partnership with another carrier to add regional flights to six new destinations -- including three routes that will replace current AirTran service.

The new flights bring more choices for people flying from Milwaukee, where competition among airlines has been increasing. AirTran made its announcement Wednesday, three days after Southwest Airlines started new service from Mitchell International.

AirTran will begin flying twice daily to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport on April 6, said Kevin Healy, senior vice president of marketing and planning. AirTran in April also will add another daily flight to its service to Reagan National Airport in Washington.

In addition, Orlando, Fla.-based AirTran announced a marketing partnership with SkyWest Airlines.

St. George, Utah-based SkyWest will offer new regional jet service between Milwaukee and six destinations: Pittsburgh; St. Louis; Akron/Canton, Ohio; Indianapolis; Des Moines, Iowa; and Omaha, Neb. Tickets will be sold though AirTran's reservation system, and revenue will be shared between the two airlines.

The SkyWest flights, using 50-seat Bombardier regional jets, will be added in December, January and February.

Current AirTran service from Milwaukee to three of the SkyWest destinations -- St. Louis, Indianapolis and Pittsburgh -- will then be dropped, said AirTran spokesman Christopher White. That will allow AirTran to shift its 117-seat Boeing 717 jets to other routes, including Milwaukee- Dallas.

"We only have so many planes," White said. "This was the only way to expand our footprint in Milwaukee."

AirTran provides one daily flight from Milwaukee to Indianapolis and Pittsburgh and two daily flights to St. Louis. SkyWest will provide three daily flights to all six of its new destinations.

AirTran's arrangement with SkyWest is unusual. Typically, larger airlines contract with airlines such as SkyWest to operate regional flights under the larger carrier's brand, such as Midwest Connect or American Eagle.

Healy said the company didn't want to create an "AirTran Express" because of concerns it would hurt the brand developed by AirTran, which makes a point of not using smaller regional jets on shorter routes. The partnership with SkyWest allows AirTran, a low-fare airline, to expand its Milwaukee hub cost-effectively, he said.

AirTran ticket counters and gates at Mitchell International will handle the passengers, and the tickets will be available through AirTran's call center and Web site, as well as through travel agents and online booking sites such as Orbitz.com, Healy said.

With the changes, AirTran will offer 38 daily flights to 18 destinations, while SkyWest will have 18 daily flights to six destinations.

Aside from AirTran, the primary carrier serving those destinations from Milwaukee is Midwest Airlines. Oak Creek-based Midwest offers nonstop flights to all of the new AirTran and SkyWest destinations except Akron/Canton and St. Louis. Midwest has announced plans to resume service to St. Louis on March 1.

Midwest Airlines, owned by Republic Airways Holdings Inc., is Milwaukee's No. 1 carrier, with 35.5% market share, followed by AirTran with 24.5% and Delta Air Lines/Northwest at 19.9%.
