"That aroma and the good smells were very exciting," Melissa Chamales said after she and her son walked into the new Barnes & Noble book store in the South Plains Mall.
Walking toward the children's book section with 11-year-old Alex Chamales, the mother said she thought the book chain's new store would be an improvement over its previous location just blocks south of the mall on Slide Road.
"We're excited to have a two-story Barnes and Noble," she said. "We go to Barnes & Nobles in in other, bigger cities and it's like Lubbock's becoming a big city. I think it puts Lubbock on the map."
Customers said they were pleased with the new store's selection of book and gifts as they visited the 35,000-square foot store's first day of business, store manager Wade Whatley said.
"It's been packed like this from the get go -- it's been very brisk," he said as hundreds of customers strolled past store shelves that hold nearly 200,000 book, music and DVD titles.
Whatley said the book seller's space and capacity were nearly doubled with the move from its old, single-story building. The previous location in the 6700 block of Slide Road will become the new location for Lubbock's Godeke public library.
Chamales said she was excited to browse the larger selection of books at the new Barnes & Noble.
"I always had to order books that they didn't have in the other store," she said.
Alex Chamales said he was pleased with the store's towering, yellow display of hundreds of copies of the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" childrens book series.
"This is a great store," he said.
Self-described book lover Iva Dell Nowell was anxious for days to see what the new store had to offer, she said while browsing the Antiques and Collectibles book section Wednesday afternoon.
"I couldn't wait to get here because I love to read," she said, "and I just didn't want to miss anything."
Nowell said she'd shopped at the store's previous location every few weeks.
"Or sometimes more -- It just so happened Michaels was next to it," she added, chuckling.
Along with the larger selection of books, Nowell said, she found a pleasant surprise when she walked into the new two-story shop.
"I wasn't expecting the escalator," she said.
