SHANGHAI, Nov 05, 2009 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) --
SHI | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- A 150,000-ton C5 separation device solely developed by Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Co., Ltd. (SPC, SHSE: 600688, SEHK: 0338 and NYSE: SHI), the biggest one of its likes in China, started operation in the company's C5 R&D and production base yesterday.

C5 is the byproduct of ethene production. One ton of C5 will be produced with every ten tons of ethene. Refined chemical materials such as isoprene and pentadiene will be generated through the separation of C5.

They are widely used in the manufacturing of rubber, cosmetics, pesticides, Vitamin E, traffic paint, essence, and flavor. However, due to the complexity of the separation technology, most of the C5 products are burned as low-price fuels in China.

Through technology innovation and equipment rebuilding, SPC boosts the processing capacity of its existing C5 separation device from 25,000 tons to 75,000 tons. Thus, the company's gross C5 processing capacity reaches 225,000 tons and China's overall C5 utility ratio climbs ten percentage points to 47%.

Currently, SPC's C5 refined products are all exported to Europe, the US, and Japan. Last year, the company got sales revenues of nearly CNY 500 million from the exports.
