And one player that has been central to the Vikings' success throughout the season has been junior setter Daniella Lacroix.
Last week Lacroix came up with a team-leading 41 assists against crosstown rival Chico, helping her team to a tough road win in five hard-fought games.
To keep things rolling, Lacroix had a season-high performance against Foothill as she passed for 45 assists in a 3-2 victory that guaranteed PV a piece of the EAL crown.
In all, Lacroix has accumulated 663 assists over the year, and because of her ball-distributing abilities, PV coach Dave Davis looks to her to control the pace of every match.
"The setter has got to be kind of the quarterback to what we want to do on offense and what needs to be done out there," Davis said. "I rely on Daniella to be able to do those things. She's able to deliver hitable balls to the kids we need to get the ball to. She makes some of those kids' jobs a little easier. As a setter, you've got to be not just one of the hardest workers, but you've got to be thick-skinned, a great team leader, and she's done that really well."
For Lacroix, team play has made all the difference for this year's Viking squad.
"I feel like we have a lot of really good individual players, and compared to last year, we all just played our
part and were much more positive," Lacroix said. "I feel like I have pretty good chemistry with all of the players. I think it's a bonus if you trust the person on the court more and there's not a negative atmosphere out there."
With the postseason just around the corner, PV will be looking to shore up a few things to ensure that the team continues to win, but one thing that will remain the same is Lacroix's involvement as a team leader.
"I really think in order for us to have success in the postseason we really need to lean on her, and also to speed up our offense," Davis said. "We're going to rely on her to make those decisions and to get the ball out to our hitters quicker."
