William G. Salatich, 1922-2009: Former president of Gillette North America promoted hiring diversity

Nov 05, 2009 (Chicago Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- G | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- William G. Salatich held no degree beyond high school, but he rose to the position of president of Gillette North America with a salesman's charisma and marketing savvy.

Mr. Salatich, 87, died of congestive heart failure Wednesday, Oct. 28, in his home in Northfield, said his son, William Jr.

An Army veteran who knocked around in the 1940s on jobs that included managing a bowling alley and driving a cab, Mr. Salatich at his wife's urging took an aptitude test offered by the Veterans Administration.

The woman who administered the test referred him to her father, a field manager for Gillette, and Mr. Salatich landed a sales job covering Chicago's South Side for the personal-care products and small-appliances marketer.

Over the next 32 years, he held 11 posts at Gillette, making a steady climb up the corporate ladder. For a time, he ran the Toni hair care division in Chicago but also spent much of his career as an executive at the company's Boston headquarters.

Hard work and a sense of what brands would succeed and the right avenues for selling them made his reputation. He was an advocate for launching a deodorant called Right Guard nationally, rather than trotting it out slowly in test markets, a move that proved prescient for what became a popular brand.

He forged a partnership for Toni with the Miss America pageant and crafted sponsorships for Gillette's men's products with televised sporting events, including the NCAA Final Four basketball tournament, said Bob Murray, a retired Gillette executive vice president.

Aware of his humble roots, he made a point of promoting minorities and women, and made doing the same a factor in his employees' job reviews, his son said. His work in this area won him a citation from the National Conference of Christians and Jews (now the National Conference for Community and Justice) in the 1970s.

He retired as president of Gillette North America and vice chairman of the board in 1979. His wife, Dawn, had been ill with breast cancer and died shortly afterward.

Survivors also include his wife, Phyllis; three daughters, Natalie Jacobson, Sandra Windholz and Jean; two stepsons, Bruce and Douglas Wilmot; a brother, Robert Susich; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services were held.
