American, affiliate improve: Passenger traffic is up from a year ago, airline executives report.

Nov 05, 2009 (Tulsa World - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- AMR | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- American Airlines and American Eagle, its regional airline affiliate, reported continuing improvement in passenger traffic in October compared with October 2008, airline executives said Wednesday.

Passenger traffic began to improve in September compared with the same month a year earlier after almost a year of near double-digit declines.

American flew 10.24 billion revenue passenger miles last month, down 2.6 percent from the same month last year, on a capacity decrease of 7.3 percent. A revenue passenger mile is flying one paying passenger one mile.

American's load factor -- the percentage of seats filled -- was 83.1 percent last month, an increase of 4 points compared with October last year.

The Fort Worth-based airline boarded 7.12 million passengers in October, down 4.2 percent from the same month a year ago.

In the first 10 months of the year, American flew 102.73 billion revenue passenger miles, an 8.2 percent decline, on a capacity decrease of 7.8 percent.

American's load factor through October was 80.8 percent, a drop of 0.3 points from the same period of 2008.

American boarded 71.95 million passengers in the first 10 months, down 8.7 percent.

American Eagle flew 680.08 million revenue passenger miles last month, up 6 percent from October 2008, on a capacity increase of 0.7 percent.

American Eagle's load factor last month was 73.3 percent, up 3.7 points.

The regional airline boarded 1.68 million passengers

in October, a 6.9 percent increase over the same month a year ago.

For the first 10 months, American Eagle flew 6.43 billion revenue passenger miles, a 5 percent decline, on a capacity decrease of 6.6 percent.

American Eagle's load factor through October was 71.6 percent, 1.2 points above the first 10 months of 2008.

American Eagle boarded 15.64 million passengers through the first 10 months, a 4 percent decline.
