City workers repaired the south fountain and turned on the water Wednesday, activating it for the first time in several years.
"After a yearlong fundraising effort, it feels really good to have taken the first step toward restoration of the monument," Soldiers Monument Committee Chairman Erik Hack said.
The granite and bronze monument, dedicated in 1920, honors Morgan County soldiers and sailors who fought in the Civil War, as well as the sacrifices women made to save the Union.
Hack said finding replacement parts to make the south fountain functional has been difficult. The fountains were installed in the mid-1970s.
"Parts were taken from the north fountain, which is not working, to make the other fountain functional, and the search continues to find parts to repair the north fountain," Hack said.
He added that he has talked to a local manufacturer about fabricating brass jets to replace those that have been stolen from the fountains.
Water to the south fountain will be shut off next week and the fountains prepared for winter.
The Soldiers Monument Committee has thus far raised slightly more than $10,000 to help pay for materials to restore the monument.
One of the major aspects of the project involves restoring the bronze plates around the base of the monument.
The plates hold the names of Morgan County men who served in the Civil War.
"We are looking into how to safely remove the bronze plates," Hack said. "They will then be straightened and a stainless steel support grid will be installed beneath the plates. We're trying to do it in conjunction with the square restoration. We took a year to raise funds and we hope to complete the monument restoration within the next year."
A ceremony kicking off the restoration take place Nov. 14 during the second annual Veterans Remembered event on Central Park Plaza.
"The event was created to honor veterans and to raise community awareness and funds for the monument," Hack said.
