The food cooperative with a chain of some 120 outlets in Kanagawa Prefecture will open its first discount store on Friday by completely overhauling its Sagamidai store in the city of Sagamihara. The store will not change names but will begin selling perishable and processed foods, beverages and other items for 10-15 per cent less than existing stores. Sales space for fruits and vegetables will be expanded by 70 per cent compared with conventional stores and produce will be sold for 30 per cent less.
The store will primarily handle discount manufacturers' products and private-brand goods, paring the total number of items on offer by nearly 40 per cent. By restocking shelves less frequently, the co-op aims to make workers more efficient and cut costs. Sales of one billion yen per year are targeted, a 60 per cent increase.
Co-op Kanagawa plans to open more discount stores in the future, primarily by converting unprofitable locations.
