Nov 06, 2009 (The Times-Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- ZZVWL | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Following 80 minutes of regulation, and two 15 minute sudden-death overtime periods, Valley View and Western Wayne were deadlocked at 1-1, forcing the District 2 Class AA girls soccer championship to a shootout.

Valley View goalie Jacqui Rossi set the tone early for the Cougars as she stopped the opening attempt by Shannon Laul. Western Wayne goalie Phoebe Olsommer matched her counterpart by denying Tory Legg.

After three consecutive goals made by each team, Rossi was one stop away from giving her team the opportunity to close out the Wildcats on their next penalty kick attempt.

As Kacie Urian ripped a high shot, Rossi leaped in the air pinning the ball against the upper crossbar preventing the ball from going into the net.

"I knew what to expect coming into the shootout," Rossi said. "I just tried to guess what way they were going with it, luckily it ended up in our favor."

With a chance for the victory, Valley View coach Chris Stahl sent Gabby Santarelli to seal the Cougars second consecutive District 2 Class AA Championship.

Santarelli did exactly that, propelling the Cougars to victory over a gritty Wildcats team.

"This is just really exciting, before I went to shoot I told myself to relax, Santarelli said. "It was just a pass to the corner."

With both squads unable to score during the first 70 minutes of regulation, each team saw many chances slip through their grasp.

Western Wayne, though, was able to break through first when Urian hit the back of the net off a pass from Rachel Batemen giving the Wildcats, what they thought to be a game-winning goal with just 8:26 remaining in the game.

However, Valley View, never quit.

Following a Wildcats foul, the Cougars set up for a direct kick in hopes of tying the game.

The Cougars were successful in using the free play to their advantage.

Deanna Cleary sent a pass to the feet of Sara Dubravck, who was then able to slide the ball past Olsommer in the lower right corner, tying the game at 1 with only 5 minutes remaining.

"I just found the ball at my feet and took my time and luckily it went in," Dubravck said.

In overtime, both teams battled back and forth with each narrowly missing chances to score.

"Tonight was just an all out effort by the girls in a battle from start to finish," said Stahl. "Both teams played an exceptional game, fortunately we were able to come out on top."

Valley View advances to the PIAA State Tournament on Tuesday at a time and site to be decided.

With the score tied at 1 due to each team scoring in the final 10 minutes of regulation, both the Cougars and Wildcats had opportunities to end the game.
