Nov 06, 2009 (Contra Costa Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- DVLY | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Deer Valley High's Nathaniel Wilson woke up Thursday morning without an individual win this cross country season.

Today, he gets out of bed under different circumstances.

The senior came from behind and surged into the lead on the final long downhill of the 3-mile Contra Loma Regional Park course in Antioch, approximately three-quarters of a mile from the finish, in the Bay Valley Athletic League championship meet. Wilson won with an outstanding time of 16 minutes, 57.61 seconds.

"It's a good feeling. It's kind of shocking," Wilson said of his win. "Last time, (Heritage's Eric Morford) beat me downhill, so I knew I had to take him (on the) downhill."

Deer Valley's Nate Baker led the first half of the race, and by approximately the halfway point he had a two-second lead on Morford and a seven-second lead on Wilson. But Wilson worked his way into the lead and held off Morford, who was second in 17:17.96. Led by Wilson, Deer Valley won the boys championship meet team title with a score of 28.

Pittsburg's Marcie Torres used different tactics to win the girls race. The junior took the lead in the first mile and held a nearly five-yard lead over defending champion Stephanie Siemens of Deer Valley at the halfway point. She widened that advantage in the second half to win in 20:48.10. Freedom's Carmen Martinez was second (20:56.74), and Siemens was third (21:14.20). Deer Valley won the girls championship meet team title with a score

of 46.

PAL Championships: Carlmont swept the individual and team honors at the Peninsula Athletic League championships at Crystal Springs.

Ben Heck took first place in the boys race in a personal-best time of 15 minutes, 40 seconds on the 2.95-mile course in the Belmont hills. Last year Heck ran 16:09 at the PAL finals and was the third finisher on the Carlmont team.

"Ultimately, I want to do well at state and get my name out there," he said.

The Carlmont boys, with Chet Reyen third in 15:55, Nathan Lee fifth (15:59), Ben Bunk seventh (16:03) and Pierce McKenzie 10th (16:22) took first with 26 points. Woodside, led by Kyle Feuerhelm (second, 15:49) and Peter Gunn (sixth, 16:02), was second with 78

Jessie Petersen won the girls race in 17:41, a personal best by 13 seconds. The Carlmont girls had 31 points. Half Moon Bay was second with 50.

"At CCS, I want to PR again," Petersen said, "maybe five seconds, maybe more."

"I feel like that determined the rest of the match," Mission San Jose coach Donny Hui said. "We have a history of losing the first game to Irvington, and it's big to get over that psychological factor."
