According to the news source, the company will invest RMB2 billion to support R&D activities of clean energy cars and RMB2 billion to manufacture key components for energy cars. In addition, the automaker will invest RMB2 billion to construct manufacturing plants.
The company may outsource batteries and is reportedly in discussions with potential partners including Chinese automobile manufacturer BYD Company, reported Reuters citing the Shanghai Securities News.
Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) expects to launch its self-manufactured Roewe hybrid sedan in 2010 and electric cars by 2012.
