Although ADM wouldn't confirm a report in the newspaper Valor Economico about plans to build a third mill, the source said that the U.S. trading company is searching for organic or acquisition opportunities.
"ADM doesn't have investment plans at the moment," the source said.
ADM already has two ethanol mills in Brazil. ADM, in partnership with Grupo Cabrera, started crushing operations at its first mill in the center-west region in October. The mill has a capacity to crush 3 million metric tons of cane.
ADM's second mill also in the same region--with a planned capacity to crush 3 million tons--is in the development stage, the source said.
Archer Daniels' press office was unavailable to comment.
The sector has witnessed acquisitions this year. Brazilian sugar and ethanol group Cosan Ltd. (CZZ) acquired local milling group Nova America in March while Louis Dreyfus in October acquired SantelisaVale SA, Brazil's second largest sugar and ethanol group.
Brazil is the world's No.1 producer of sugarcane-based ethanol.
