The carrier said its traffic declined on domestic routes and all three parts of its international service. But its capacity dropped even more on all parts of its system except over the Pacific.
Systemwide, American's traffic fell 2.6 percent on a 7.3 percent cut in flying capacity.
Separately, American, which previously delayed the start of its new Chicago-Beijing route to May 1, has moved up its first flight to April 26.
American said the earlier launch will give travelers more time to get to China to celebrate International Labor Day on May 1.
