Woman pleads guilty to embezzling from Easter Seals, sentenced to probation

DECATUR, Nov 06, 2009 (Herald and Review - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- CILL | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The former financial director for Easter Seals of Central Illinois pleaded guilty Thursday in Macon County Circuit Court to one count of theft of more than $10,000 for embezzling more than $23,000 from the organization.

Sarah Jean Johnson, 31, was sentenced to two years of probation by Associate Judge Timothy Steadman, who accepted her guilty plea under an agreement reached between her attorney, Karen Root, and Assistant State's Attorney David Spence.

Johnson, who had no prior felony convictions, must pay a $200 fee to have her DNA indexed by the Illinois State Police, Steadman said. She also must pay restitution, but the amount will be determined within 30 days, he said.

Spence said Easter Seals wants to include in the restitution the cost of the audit that it had to conduct to discover the extent of Johnson's embezzlement.

Johnson worked as the organization's finance director from March 2007 to May 2008, Spence said. Discrepancies in family health care payments Johnson was making caused the organization to initiate an audit, he said.

The auditors determined that Johnson had, in a variety of ways, taken cash without authorization, Spence said. For example, she had Easter Seals pay $5,885 in family health insurance premiums that were her responsibility to pay, he said.

Easter Seals also provided day care services to Johnson's family totaling $6,571 that she was responsible for paying but had not done so, Spence said. Johnson would give Easter Seals a check for the day care fees, but when the checks were returned to her as financial director for processing she would remove her check from the others and alter the deposit slip to reflect a lower receipts total, he said.

The auditors also found other thefts of money in excess of $10,900, Spence said.
