The Yellowjackets, who trailed 2-1 after two periods, had their chance to possibly tying the game up when Lake Forest took a hooking penalty with 6:25 remaining.
But the 'Jackets were kept off the board by Lake Forest goaltender Alyssa Wintermute and the Forester penalty kill unit.
Superior used its timeout with 3:18 remaining, but despite having fresh legs, it was unable to muster any offensive pressure.
The Foresters' defensive play was so strong in fact, they didn't even allow UWS to pull its goaltender for an extra attacker.
Wintermute finished with 16 saves while Melissa Kunzelman had 15 saves for UWS.
In a scoreless first period, each goaltender made six saves, but UWS was the more aggressive team, with a 20-8 advantage in shots attempted.
The 'Jackets scored the game's first goal on Jodi Holland's short-handed tally 5:33 into the second period.
Jessica Tyra set up the goal with a close-range shot. Forester goaltender Wintermute made the save, but Holland picked up the loose puck and scored from just outside the crease.
The lead didn't last long as Kim Herring scored for Lake Forest less than four minutes later. Chelsea Thompson and Melissa Kravich picked up assists.
Lake Forest took a 2-1 lead with 36 seconds left in the second period when Herring took a behind-the-net pass from Lynn Switaj and ripped a wrist shot over Kunzelman's left shoulder.
The 'Jackets and Foresters wrap up their series at noon on Saturday.
