"This step is based on clinical evidence that children are especially susceptible to the H1N1 virus," Dr. Stephen M. Parodi, Kaiser's chief of infectious disease for Northern California, said in a written statement.
Joe Fragola, a Kaiser spokesman, said the restriction is part of a new visitation policy that applies to Kaiser hospitals throughout Northern California. Kaiser management is also prohibiting anyone who has a fever higher than 100 degrees, a cough or sore throat and any other flulike symptoms from visiting Kaiser hospitals.
Fragola said young children are being restricted "because they are at higher risk for infection with H1N1 influenza; may not indicate that they are not feeling well early on in the illness; and are less likely to follow hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette practices."
At Marin General Hospital this summer, after at least one nurse became ill with the flu, all but three entrances were closed and each person who entered the hospital was screened for flulike symptoms. Entrants were provided with a gel to sanitize their hands and were asked if they had had a fever or sore throat in the past three days. Anyone who answered affirmatively was barred from entering.
Since then, however, security has eased and hospital spokeswoman Kathie Graham said,
"Right now as of today we're not restricting visitors, but we are certainly prepared to do so."
Graham said the hospital's visitation policy will be one of the key agenda items when the hospital's H1N1 steering committee meets next week.
Fragola said Kaiser has offered the swine flu vaccine to all of its health-care workers who are involved with direct patient care. Marin General, however, has been able to vaccinate only a portion of its doctors and nurses, Graham said.
"We received a fairly small supply of H1N1 vaccine from the county (a week ago)," Graham said. "We started with the emergency department staff, the physicians and respiratory therapists who work down there."
