BRIEF: Xcel Energy seeks smaller electric rate increase; hearing is Wednesday

Nov 07, 2009 (La Crosse Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- XEL | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Xcel Energy of Wisconsin said Friday that recent lower fuel and generation costs will significantly reduce its electric rate request to be discussed at a public hearing Wednesday.

The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin will have the hearing by teleconference at 3 and 6 p.m. at sites in La Crosse, Eau Claire and Madison. The La Crosse site will be Room 104 of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Wing Technolo-gy Center, 1705 State St.

Xcel filed June 1 with the PSC for an electric rate increase of 5.7 percent and proposed to keep its natural gas rates the same. The PSC staff recently suggested a 2.7 percent electric rate increase and no change in natural gas rates.

Xcel said Friday that several factors, including a potential refund of fuel and purchased power expenses, will significantly reduce its requested increase in electric rates. Company officials did not have a new percentage figure Friday.

Xcel wants the electric rate increase to take effect Jan. 1.
