AWC (0-1 overall) trailed 37-31 at the half but led 50-49 with 8 minutes remaining before the Bruins regained the lead for good. Haley Holmstead and Allie Blake had 17 and 16 points, respectively, for Salt Lake (1-1 overall).
"It was a pretty well-played game, considering it was the first college game for a lot of our players," AWC coach Patrick Cunningham said. "We showed some young mistakes, especially defensively and in shot selection. But overall, we took a good step forward, and now we keep working on things for tomorrow."
AWC had six 3-pointers and went 14-for-20 from the foul line, while Salt Lake was 24 of 32 at the charity stripe.
The Matadors continue tournament play vs. Eastern Utah at 11:30 a.m. today.
