Or at least five of its largest generator sets will be aboard. The ship, which includes 7.5 tons of steel in its bow salvaged from the World Trade Center, will have its operations -- not its propulsion -- powered by the five 3608 Caterpillar generator sets. Each set is the size of a school bus and weighs about 53 tons, said Caterpillar spokesman Jim Dugan. The engine blocks were made in Mapleton, and the diesel generators were made in Lafayette, Ind., under a contract between Caterpillar and Northrop-Grumman, which built the ship. The USS New York, which arrived in New York City on Tuesday for the commissioning, pausing near Ground Zero as it passed the foot of Manhattan, is an amphibious assault ship of the San Antonio class. "This is, of course, a huge honor for us to have the opportunity to be part of this," Dugan said. "The unique circumstances surrounding construction of the USS New York makes it truly an honor." The New York is one of three new amphibious assault ships being built in memory of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that felled the World Trade Center's twin towers, damaged the Pentagon and killed more than 3,000 people. The other two ships are under construction -- the USS Arlington, honoring the attack on the Pentagon, and the USS Somerset, named for the county in Pennsylvania where a jet that was hijacked that day by terrorists crashed, killing all aboard. All three will have steel from the World Trade Center. All three also are slated to house Caterpillar gensets. The USS New York is the fifth in the San Antonio class and all have the Caterpillar gensets, Dugan said. Paul Gordon can be reached at 686-3288 or pgordon@pjstar.com.
