It was the Loggers' first year in 8-man football and it showed. They lost all but two of their games and were out-scored by an average of 56 to 27.
This year, things are different.
Potlatch started with a 52-8 drubbing of Deary -- which it lost to 70-32 in 2008 -- and did not stop there. The Loggers crushed Clearwater Valley, embarrassed Lewis County and even shut out Lapwai.
The Logger's only loss came to a dominant Prairie team that is undefeated and has shut out four of its opponents. Despite the 59-8 loss to Prairie, Potlatch out-scored its opponents by a margin of 27 points, a 54-point difference in only the space of a year.
Now, the Loggers are headed to state playoffs after racking up eight wins and losing only one game.
Potlatch is led by senior quarterback Dustin Shepherd, who has been a reliable play-maker for the Loggers throughout the year. Last week against Troy, Shepherd threw for 150 yards and two touchdowns in a 72-48 track meet at Troy.
Another explosive player is speedy back Brandon Woodin. At only 5-foot-8, Woodin is a tough back to tackle. He torched the Trojans for 220 yards and had an average of over 24 yards per play with three touchdowns.
In the first round of the playoffs, Potlatch will travel to Wallace today to take on the 6-3 Miners, a perennial contender from the North Star League. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
"We saw them at camp," second-year coach Pat Amos said. "They are a big, physical team that comes at you hard. It will be a physical game, but that is all right. We like physical."
