Conrad, of Oak Park, was the founding rabbi emeritus of Temple Kol Ami in West Bloomfield, a Reform congregation.
"It's important that we understand that all of God's children are made in his image, " he told the Free Press in 2003. "All of our differences to God are inconsequential."
Conrad was active in pushing for civil rights for African-Americans in the 1960s, gender equality, and was an outspoken opponent in 2003 of the Iraq war. Conrad once noted that he was believed to be the only rabbi in metro Detroit to openly oppose the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.
In 2003, he received the Michigan Coalition for Human Rights' Lifetime Commitment Award.
Born and raised in Berlin during the rise of Nazi power, Conrad survived through Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass), an anti-Semitic rampage in 1938. That same year, at the age of 17, his mother sent him to the U.S. to escape anti-Jewish persecution.
"You have to leave, there is hope for us here," Conrad recalled his mother saying to him.
She and Conrad's grandmother would later die in concentration camps.
Conrad was ordained at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1947, according to his temple. Conrad served with congregations in Maryland, North Carolina, and then moved to Michigan. In 1966, He founded Temple Kol Ami with eight families.
"God is equated with consciousness, " Conrad said in 2003. "God does his work through those who are awake."
Conrad was officially retired, but shared pulpits across Michigan, according to a biography on the temple's website.
His wife, Nathalie, is the temple's music director. They had two grown children, Josef Conrad and Elsa Conrad, and one grandchild, Benjamin.
The funeral is to be held 12 noon Monday at Temple Kol Ami, 5085 Walnut Lake Road, West Bloomfield, followed by burial at Beth El Memorial Park Cemetery in Livonia. Hebrew Memorial Chapel is handling the services.
