The Wildcats completed a 70-yard hook-and-ladder that led to a touchdown, but that was all they would get against Brookstone.
The Cougars held Schley in check the rest of the game, going on for a 39-8 win, their seventh in a row.
"Wish we could have finished with a better note for the kids that have been there so long," said coach Jim McFather. "We wanted to send them out on a winning note, and we came up short."
On the first play of the game, Josh Worth threw a quick strike to Jonathon Deriso who flipped it to Jesse Colter and ran it down to the 3. Two plays later, Markendous Thornton ran in from six yards out; the two-point conversion gave Schley (3-6, 3-5 4-A) an 8-0 lead.
"We wanted to try to make something happen," said McFather. "Sometimes you need those. It may be easy points, but we need them.
"We've practiced it a couple of weeks. We thought maybe we could get up and be in the ball game. It was a beautiful play; we caught them by surprise."
Milton McCluskey scored the first of his two touchdowns on the next possession on a 3-yard run. His 7-yard run put Brookstone (8-2, 6-2) up for good. The Cougars led 36-8 at the half after a Jake Howard 4-yard run followed an interception that was returned to the Schley 4.
Schley had 155 yards of offense compared with 338 for Brookstone.
"We couldn't get anything going," said McFather. "We had kids playing hurt, and some were out. We knew going in to play them it would be tough, whether they had a full compliment (of players) or not.
"We told the kids after the game that this season taught us to persevere. They survived and persevered to the end."
Colter had 45 yards rushing and was credited with the 70-yard reception. He led the defense with 12 tackles; Chad Fullman and Trae Mann had 10; Deriso, Cody Patrick and Jordan Ball all had eight.
McFather said the team will start its offseason program in a couple of weeks.
