(TSE:9501), or Tepco, announced plans Monday to use wood waste
from forest-thinning to generate electricity at a coal-fired
power plant.

The use of wood waste, to start in 2012 at its facility in
Tokai, Ibaraki Prefecture, will help reduce carbon dioxide
emissions by 110,000 tons a year, or 2-3 per cent of the volume
the site discharges annually.

The process entails converting wood from forest thinnings
and waste from lumber mills into pellets, which are then
crushed and mixed with coal when burned. Tepco will use about
70,000 tons of wood a year.
