MKGAY | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Merck Eprova AG has signed an exclusive license agreement with Isofol Medical AB, a Sweden-based developer of new method for the treatment of cancer, to utilize Merck Eprova's proprietary folate compound Modufolin(R) in oncology. Merck Eprova is a Switzerland-based wholly-owned subsidiary of Merck KGaA, a Germany-based pharmaceutical and chemicals company.

Under the terms of the agreement, Merck Eprova will provide Modufolin(R), the active metabolite of LV (Leucovorin), for use in clinical trials and commercial drug products.

Modufolin is a biomodulator originally designed to replace LV as the preferred folate to enhance the activity and reduce associated toxicity of 5-FU (5-fluorouracil), a widely used anti-cancer drug. Isofol Medical will conduct phase I and II studies using a combination of Modufolin and antifolates starting in autumn 2009 and expected to close by the end of 2010.
