GSK | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The Stiefel plant in Greene County is facing closure by new parent company GlaxoSmithKline within a few years, resulting in the loss of 260 jobs.

But local economic development officials are planning a meeting Monday at the plant, in the town of Durham, to try and convince officials there to keep it open.

Stiefel makes various facial cleansers and acne medicine at the plant.

Greene County IDA executive director Alexander "Sandy" Mathes says that he has reached out to state and federal elected officials as well as state economic development officials to help retain the company. He said they are prepared to offer the company any help needed.

"We're coming with one message," Mathes said. "What can be done to save these critical jobs?"

GlaxoSmithKline closed this summer on a $3.3 billion deal to acquire Stiefel.

"We're going to go down fighting," Mathes said. "We are not taking this announcement as gospel. We are rallying the troops as we speak."
