Corp. (TSE:9432) unit NTT East Corp. on Thursday announced
plans to release a small Internet device running Google Inc.'s
Android operating system in the first half of fiscal 2010.
The new device features a 7-inch touch-panel display and can
serve as a digital picture frame as well as a Net-browsing
terminal when desired. Equipped with wireless LAN (local area
network) functionality, it can be used while being carried
around the house.
By using Android, NTT East was able to reduce costs by 20-30
per cent per unit. It thinks that the product will be priced at
around 25,000 yen (US$276.65).
KDDI Corp. (TSE:9433) is also developing an Internet TV
receiver using Android, with plans to release it in fiscal
2010. KDDI expects to reduce development costs as much as 60
per cent by using the Google operating system.
Because Android is free and helps reduce costs to digital
device users, it is rapidly expanding as a presence in markets
beyond cellular phones.
