Students learn about area careers and colleges
CAAC | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- ARCHITECT, Doctor And Financial Adviser -- all careers that can be learned and practiced in Scranton.
Thirty-five area high school juniors are learning about those professions this fall as part of Career Academy, a three-part program sponsored by the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce.
On Thursday, students learned about medical careers during a visit to the Commonwealth Medical College, where they met with officials and toured the temporary headquarters at Lackawanna College.
"If you're really interested in helping people, I don't think there's anything better you can do," Robert D'Alessandri, M.D., the school's dean and president, told the students.
Dr. D'Alessandri, who had wanted to become a doctor since high school and was the first in his family to attend college, told the students about the importance of hard work and volunteering.
"The satisfaction you get is incredible," he said. "The moments you spend with people helping them ... that in and of itself is a tremendous reward."
Through a grant provided by the Lackawanna County Workforce Investment Board, the students from 12 area high schools visited Marywood University's new architecture school and Hemmler and Camayd Architects last month.
The group also visited General Dynamics in Archbald on Thursday morning. Next month, the students will learn about careers in finance, with a trip to the University of Scranton business school and Prudential Financial.
Along with visiting sites, the students also have received advice on applying for college, including "how to differentiate" themselves on college applications.
"These kids have no idea what kinds of jobs they can get by staying in their own backyard," said Jeffrey Rubel, chamber vice president of Skills in Scranton.
