NSANY | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Nissan Motor Co. and the Miyazaki prefectural government agreed Friday to cooperate in promoting electric vehicles through such means as creating a network of charging stations.

The accord was signed by Nissan Chief Operating Officer Toshiyuki Shiga and Miyazaki Gov. Hideo Higashikokubaru at the Japanese automaker's head office in Yokohama.

"Mass adoption of electric cars is key to creating a sustainable low-carbon society, and it is essential for us to work with public and private stakeholders to achieve success," Shiga said.

Higashikokubaru said, "Miyazaki is committed to promote renewable energy." Based on the agreement, the Miyazaki government will consider implementing a range of preferential treatments for EV owners through such steps as providing discounts for parking fees at public and commercial facilities in the southwestern Japanese prefecture.

Nissan has said it will introduce the LEAF electric car in Japan, Europe and the United States in 2010, to be followed by its global mass marketing in 2012.

The automaker earlier signed similar cooperation arrangements with the Kanagawa prefectural government, as well as with the Yokohama and Saitama city governments.

The alliance between Nissan and its longtime partner Renault SA of France has signed zero-emission partnerships with more than 30 governments, municipalities and companies worldwide.
