Operation Specialist 3rd Class Kyle Webb left USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) last year to train for his duty in theater. Webb learned how to identify explosives and improvised explosive devices. He also trained to conduct counter-rocket, artillery, and mortar (CRAM) measures, combat, and medical aid.

When Webb arrived in Iraq, he performed convoy operations that involved escorting VIPs who couldn't be transported by aircraft because of night or enemy CRAM threats. Webb also worked with interior communications electricians and minemen, two rates he normally doesn't get to interact with, as well as the United States Army and Air Force.

Webb learned to live a whole new lifestyle because the Army's way of life is different from the Navy's.

"It's an experience that, in order to properly understand it, you have to experience it [for yourself]," said Webb.

According to Webb, the most important knowledge he walked away with was the medical training he received because it can be necessary when in a combat situation.

"It's not just you [that] you're looking out for," said Webb. "You're looking out for everyone around you and you know they're looking out for you."
