JCI | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Dozens of laid-off workers picketed outside Unilever in Hammond on Wednesday amid concerns that a company managing contract employees at the facility brought in workers from Wisconsin for a project over those who are unemployed locally.
Randy Palmateer, business manager for the Northwest Indiana Building Trades Council, said Roofers Local 26 led the campaign that began Tuesday to protest a lack of local hiring on a roofing project. Palmateer said Johnson Controls Inc. picked Saukville, Wis.-based JT Roofing, and work began at least a month ago. He said the issue isn't about union or nonunion work. Rather, it's about paying people living in the area an adequate wage, he said.
"We want to put our Northwest Indiana people to work, specifically Hammond residents," Palmateer said.
About 40 people were at the protest, including a number of roofers who were from Hammond, he said.
A Unilever PLC spokeswoman couldn't be reached for comment late Wednesday afternoon, and a Johnson Controls spokeswoman didn't have any immediate information on the issue when reached Wednesday.
Palmateer said he anticipated negotiations between Johnson Controls and the company would begin today.
