BKS | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The Grand Forks B. Dalton bookstore found out Monday afternoon it's not being closed by its parent chain, Barnes & Noble, said Katie Budde, store manager.

The news was welcomed Monday not only by customers dreading the city's main two bookstores closing the same month, but also by B. Dalton's nearby competitor.

"I have no idea," Budde said when asked why the company switched plans.

The company announced last week the Columbia Mall store would close by Jan. 31 as part of a nationwide closing of all but two of the 50 remaining B. Dalton stores.

Budde referred a Herald reporter to her district manager in Salt Lake City for details and explanations. A call there was not returned immediately.

There are now no plans to lay off any store employees, Budde said.

Two weeks ago, Waldenbooks, just a few feet away from B. Dalton in the mall announced it would close in January.

Like Barnes & Noble, the nation's biggest book store chain, Borders Group, parent company of Waldenbooks and the second-largest chain, is closing most of its smaller bookstores and concentrating on more profitable "super stores," according to news reports.

Barnes & Noble stores and Borders bookstores mostly will remain open, including the Barnes & Noble in Fargo.

The plan to close Waldenbooks in the mall still is on, "as far as we know," Store Manager Cynthia Selzler said Monday.

Told that the B. Dalton store heard Monday it would remain open, Selzler said, "Oh, all right! That's good to hear."

That may not be the reaction one might expect from a competitor.

But Selzler, who has managed the Waldenbooks store for 22 years, demonstrates a key element of the book seller's art.

"People have been coming in, hearing that both stores are closing and they are so distressed," Selzler said. "It was not going to be a very good situation. It would have been really bleak, to think we wouldn't have a single bookstore."

Selzler said she isn't sure what her plans will be. Continuing on with Border bookstores would mean a move, because the nearest stores are in the Twin Cities and Sioux Falls, S.D.
