Sanyo to quadruple photovoltaic cell production capacity in 6 years
SANYY | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Sanyo Electric Co. said Tuesday it plans to more than quadruple its photovoltaic cell production capacity in six years to 1.5 million kilowatts in fiscal 2015.
Sanyo, the 11th-largest PV cell producer in the world in terms of production volume as of 2008, will seek to be among the top three, it said.
Its PV cell production capacity totals 340,000 kilowatts for the current fiscal year through next March and is scheduled to expand to 565,000 kilowatts in fiscal 2010 at its factories in Kaizuka, Osaka Prefecture, and Unnan, Shimane Prefecture.
As the two factories have no space to expand production capacity further, Sanyo will consider building a new PV cell factory in Japan, it said.
Sanyo also plans to substantially increase PV cell panel production capacity at its factories in Shiga Prefecture, Mexico and Hungary.
As the company is expected to become a subsidiary of Panasonic Corp. in the near future, Tetsuhiro Maeda, general manager of Sanyo's solar division, said, "We will take advantage of the Panasonic group's PV panel sales channels for housing."
