BEIJING, Nov 18, 2009 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) --
CAL | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Continental Airlines Inc. (NYSE:CAL) has taken Air China Ltd. (SHSE: 601111) and Shanghai Airlines Co., Ltd. (SHSE: 600591) as its potential partners for establishment of joint ventures aimed at some international airlines, according to Walter B. Dias, the US air carrier's president for Greater China and Southeast Asia.

Continental Airlines has been operating the direct flights from Beijing and Shanghai to New York, and the US company is also researching the possibility of applying for more Sino-US direct airlines. Upon an agreement between the two governments, China and the US are set to accept three new direct airways from each other in 2010.

The H1N1 influenza hits the Chinese aviation market harder than the global financial storm does, but the pandemic's effects are weakening in the country, said Mr. Dias, expecting the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai to bring more opportunities to his company.

Besides, Continental Airlines lately formed a partnership with some Chinese travel agencies to develop an indirect tourism airline from China to Guam, the nearest US island to China.
