TWC | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Time Warner Cable launches a new philanthropic effort at 3 p.m. Thursday on Wilmington's riverfront.

Called Connect A Million Minds, it will introduce youth to opportunities and resources to develop skills they need to succeed, the company said.

Time Warner Cable said it is making a 5-year, $100 million commitment in cash and in-kind support companywide, with $11 million of that going to North Carolina, according to spokeswoman Melissa Buscher.

The company is presenting $25,000 in donations during the Thursday event to get things started, Buscher said.

Students from New Hanover County 4-H, Science Olympiad and Girl Scouts Pines of Carolina will study the concept of gyroscopes in Segways and in the weaponry on the Battleship North Carolina.

After taking a ride on the Segways, the students will take a boat to the battleship for the official unveiling at 6 p.m. of the Connect A Million, Time Warner Cable said.

In the event of rain, the Segway demonstration will occur inside the Water Street Parking Deck, 200 N. Water St.
