SEOUL -- South Korean stocks closed higher Thursday on foreign
buying.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) jumped
16.57 points, or 1.03 percent, to 1,620.54, hitting near a one-
month high.
The volume was thin at 271.7 million shares worth 4.65 trillion
won (4.02 billion U.S. dollars).

TOKYO -- The Nikkei stock index fell sharply Thursday to a
four- month closing low near 9,500 as investors began to sell
stocks amid growing worries about economic uncertainties.
The benchmark 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 127.33
points, or 1.32 percent, from Wednesday to 9,549.47, its lowest
close since July 17, after dipping as low as 9,496.07 at one
point.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the
Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 12.35 points, or 1.45 percent, to
837.71, its lowest since April 28.
Trading was active with volume on the main section coming to 2,
558.25 million shares, up from Wednesday's 2,263.80 million.
The TSE's Second Section index was down 15.29 points, or 0.77
percent, to 1,979.58 on a volume of 54.59 million shares. On the
Osaka Securities Exchange, the near-term December Nikkei 225 index
futures contract was down 120 points to 9,550.

TAIPEI -- Share prices on the Taiwan stock market closed lower
Thursday, with the weighted index moving down 6.71 points, or 0.09
percent, to close at 7,759.98.
The local bourse opened little changed at 7,767.98 and
fluctuated between 7,797.41 and 7,751.06 during the day's trading,
with 4.48 billion shares changing hands on market turnover of 138.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks fell 197.17 points, or 0.86
percent, to close at 22,643.16 on Thursday.

JAKARTA -- Indonesian shares closed lower on Thursday after
shares of PT Astra International Tbk, one of the market's movers,
decreased sharply.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh's main bourse -- the Dhaka Stock Exchange
All Shares Price Index (DSI), the benchmark index, closed at

Tuesday's finish.
The total turnover surged to about 8.62 billion taka (about
123. 13 million U.S. dollars) on Thursday from about 8.16 billion
taka (about 116.59 million U.S. dollars) on Wednesday.

COLOMBO -- Share prices on the Colombo Stock Exchange closed
down on Thursday, with the key Colombo All Share Price Index
decreasing by 10.13 points or 0.34 percent to close at 2,960.77
points.
The highly capitalized Milanka Price Index also decreased by 15
points or 0.44 percent to close at 3,361.44 points.
A total turnover of 711.13 million rupees (about 6.18 million
U. S. dollars) was recorded during the day with a volume of 19.10
million shares being traded.

CANBERRA -- The Australian share market inched higher on
Thursday on the back of a stronger resources sector.
The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index closed up 10.2 points, or 0.22
percent, at 4,749.2 points, while the broader All Ordinaries index
gained 8.2 points, or 0.17 percent, to 4,767.8 points.
National market turnover was 2.5 billion shares worth 4.4
billion dollars (4.06 billion U.S. dollars), with 525 stocks up,

SINGAPORE -- The shares prices in Singapore rose 13.75 points
or 0.5 percent on Thursday with the benchmark Straits Times Index
(STI) closing at 2,758.79 points.

Thursday.
