Mittal reveals landfill plans
MT | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- ArcelorMittal on Wednesday described plans for a landfill on its Burns Harbor property, but company representatives answered few questions from an audience of about 35.
The Deerfield Storage Facility planned by the steel company would contain about 75.4 acres for disposal, said Steven Putrich, an engineer whose firm, CEC, is working for ArcelorMittal on the design of the landfill.
The proposal calls for a landfill with multiple layers of protection against waste seeping into soil at the site, Putrich said.
Some of the protective measures exceed Indiana Department of Environmental Management requirements, he said.
The state environmental management agency plans a Dec. 2 hearing in Chesterton for those wishing to question or comment on the record about the proposed landfill.
ArcelorMittal attorney Jessica DeMonte told audience members the meeting Wednesday was merely informational, and responded to many of their questions by saying they fell outside the scope of the meeting.
Kim Ferraro said she left the meeting without answers to her questions, including whether an existing pile of waste at the ArcelorMittal plant would go into the proposed new landfill.
Ferraro, an environmental lawyer with the Legal Environmental Aid Foundation of Indiana, said she'd only asked questions she'd been unable to find answers for in the application for the landfill permit, which is on display online and at the public library in Chesterton.
"I want to know what waste stream is actually going into the landfill," Ferraro said.
The permit application for the landfill can be found for review online through the IDEM Virtual File Cabinet, which can be accessed at http://12.186.81.89/Pages/Public/Search.aspx.
The application is also available for review at the Westchester Public Library, Thomas Library Branch, 200 W. Indiana Ave., Chesterton.
The IDEM public hearing on the permit application is from 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 2 at the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission, 6100 Southport Road, Portage.
