DOJ, SC & OSG want exemption from poll gun ban

OPHLY | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- State prosecutors, lawyers and officials of the judiciary have pushed for their exemption from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) gun ban in time for the May 10, 2010 general elections.

In their meeting Wednesday, officials from the Supreme Court's Office of the Court Administrator, Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) and Public Attorney's Office (PAO) agreed to come up with details on their officials and members who have been receiving death threats and the number of those killed which will be presented to the Comelec.

The PAO is an attached agency of the DOJ.

The election gun ban starts on Jan. 9, 2010 and ends on June 10, 2010.

"We need protection. Many of us have been receiving death threats and there are those who have been killed while performing their mandates," PAO chief Atty. Persida Rueda-Acosta said.

Acosta said she herself had been receiving death threats in the past few days.

The SC, for its part, has already put in place security measures for judges.

The judges participated in firearms orientation, marksmanship and technical proficiency training in the latter part of 2008.

"But this will not be of use if we cannot be exempt from the gun ban," Acosta said.

She further said that the SC, represented by SC spokesman and public information office chief Atty. Jose Midas Marquez, agreed to their request.

In their next meeting, Acosta said they have invited Comelec Legal Division Director Ferdinand Rafanan to whom they will submit the data on the number of judges and government lawyers killed and those receiving threats along with a letter of request.

Also present in Wednesday's meeting were DOJ Undersecretary Linda Hornilla, Chief State Prosecutor Jovencito ZuÃ±o and Assistant Solicitor General Karl Miranda.
