Warrant issued for Greensburg bank teller in thefts
STBA | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- State police have issued an arrest warrant for the head teller at the S&T Bank, 701 E. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, accusing her of stealing almost $22,000 from bank and estate accounts.
Charges of theft and forgery were filed Tuesday against Sharon Caldwell, 45, of 817 Warren St., Greensburg, with District Judge James Albert.
Police allege that between Jan. 1 and Nov. 9, Caldwell stole $13,400 from the bank and $8,494 from an estate account for a total of $21,894.
In an interview with police on Nov. 9, bank security/loss prevention officer Virginia Moorhead stated that Caldwell was questioned about the missing money and admitted taking it.
Moorhead said bank officials became suspicious in October, when Caldwell allegedly removed cash from her drawer totaling $13,400 but could not explain the transaction.
One day later, nothing appeared to be missing from the vault or teller drawers, bank officials told police.
The following day, bank officials discovered a transaction processed from Caldwell's drawer for $8,494, cashed out of an estate account. Caldwell's mother was the authorized signer. The transaction performed was not permitted by a family member, police said.
After her mother, Margaret Reed, denied she had given her daughter authority to perform the transaction, Caldwell admitted taking the money because she knew an audit would show her drawer coming up short, police said.
She later made written confessions to both thefts, police said.
Moorhead told police the bank had received full restitution. The $8,494 was recovered from Caldwell the same day it was removed from the estate account, and Reed paid the bank $13,400 on her daughter's behalf on Nov. 9, police said.
