Norwegian Biotec Pharmacon says phase III studies in diabetic foot ulcer failed
BPHAF | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- 23 November 2009 - Norwegian company Biotec Pharmacon ASA (OSL:BIOTEC)
said today both its phase III studies with the drug candidate, soluble
beta-1,3/1,6 glucan (SBG) for treatment of diabetic foot ulcer produced
negative results.
The trials failed to show superiority of SBG versus placebo in terms of
ulcer healing, the company said, adding it will not pursue further
research planned for this indication.
The phase III study with SBG for prevention and treatment of oral
mucositis is ongoing and the results are expected in the first quarter
of 2010, chief executive Lars Viksmoen said.
The firm has also started a clinical programme with SBG in
immunotherapy of cancer, where pre-clinical and early stage clinical
data indicate a synergistic effect between the product and monoclonal
antibodies.
The company added it has completed a pre-clinical research with results
in other indications for SBG.
