Interception seals Colts' win over Ravens
MTB | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- If Joe Flacco could have that last offensive play back, he would execute it differently.
Unfortunately for the Baltimore Ravens, the play Flacco kept coming back to during his post-game press conference Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium was an interception that cost Baltimore a comeback attempt against the Indianapolis Colts.
Flacco's pick -- thrown to Colts linebacker Gary Bracket deep in Indianapolis territory late in the fourth quarter -- all but sealed the Ravens' 17-15 loss to the unbeaten Colts (10-0).
"It was a bad job going to Ray in that situation, but I didn't see the guy," Flacco said. "I didn't really think the guy that ended up intercepting it was going to drop out the way he did, but it was a bad job by me."
While the interception allowed the Colts to run the clock down to 28 seconds, Flacco's mistake wasn't the last for Baltimore.
On the final punt return, Ravens safety Ed Reed attempted to pitch the football to a teammate, but misfired and the Colts recovered.
The Ravens had plenty of opportunities to hand the Colts their first loss throughout the game, however.
Baltimore made four trips inside the Colts' 20-yard-line but had just two field goals, a missed kick and the interception to show for their efforts.
"We all could have done better, me included, during different situations in the game," Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh said. "I thought we rebounded well after the first drive. The obvious difference was in the red zone." The closest the Ravens got to scoring a touchdown came on their first drive of the fourth quarter.
After Flacco hooked up with wideout Derrick Mason to get set up first and goal at the Indianapolis 1-yard-line, the best the Ravens could do was rush for no gain. They tried the quarterback sneak. Flacco got swallowed at the line of scrimmage. They tried to hand it off to running back Willis McGahee, but all he could do was lose a yard and again the Ravens had to settle for Billy Cundiff's field goal.
Cundiff, who was signed by the Ravens earlier in the week, tied former Baltimore kicker Matt Stover's franchise record for five field goals in a game. Four of Cundiff's kicks came in the first half, also tying a franchise record.
Colts tight end Dallas Clark also had a record-setting day. Clark broke former Colts tight end John Mackey's career franchise record for receptions by a tight end (321).
Ravens running back Ray Rice posted his seventh consecutive game with at least 100 all-purpose yards. Rice and teammate Haloti Ngata were quick to shift their focus to next week's game against bitter rival Pittsburgh.
"There are no words that describe how big this game is," Ngata said. "It's a rivalry. We don't like them and they don't like us. So we're just going to go out there and hit each other hard in the mouth."
