Analysts: iPhones Aim at 3 Chinese Mobile Operators
CHUFF | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: APPL) is expected to expand its iPhone territory in China through all the three local mobile operators, as China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. (SEHK: 0762 and NYSE: CHU) seemingly does not satisfy the US electronics giant's appetite, according to analysts.
China Unicom launched iPhones in China at the end of October 2009, but has lured an unsatisfactory number of users by far, insiders said. On the other hand, China Mobile Ltd. (NYSE: CHL and SEHK: 0941) is still talking with Apple about the introduction of such smartphones, Wang Jianzhou, chairman of the biggest Chinese mobile operator, disclosed lately.
Apple announced earlier that it was developing CDMA chips for iPhones, which might be needed by China Telecom Corp., Ltd. (SEHK: 0728 and NYSE: CHA), the country's only CDMA operator.
If Apple finally opened the other two doors, the Chinese high-end cellphone market would be characterized by the competition among iPhones with different telecoms standards, instead of the competition between iPhone and other brands, said analysts.
