Yale University: Two from Yale Named Rhodes Scholars For 2010
BVDRF | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Yale College senior Geoffrey C. Shaw and recent Yale graduate Matthew L. Baum have both been named Rhodes Scholars for study at Oxford University next year.
Baum, of Watertown, Massachusetts, graduated from Yale in May with a BS and MS in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology. He is currently studying for an M.Sc. in neuroscience at Trinity College, Ireland, as a Mitchell Scholar. Last year, he was named to USA Today's All-USA Academic Team. Baum has done research on Fragile-X syndrome at Yale, and on bipolar disorder at Trinity College. He was president of Yale wresting, played on the Yale rugby team in 2007, and coordinated a Yale community service program. Baum intends to do a doctorate in neuroethics at Oxford, and following that will pursue an M.D./Ph.D in the United States. His aim, he says, is to become a 'public ambassador for the sciences.' Shaw, of Belvedere, California, is a philosophy major with an interest in legal philosophy, a subject that will be his focus of study at Oxford. At Yale, he is active in debate and student government, and is the undergraduate secretary of the Elizabethan Club. In high school he founded a political magazine, and he is currently editor-in-chief of the Yale Philosophy Review. He also serves on the committee of Yale College for major student discipline cases, and is head freshman counselor for Branford College. In addition to tutoring local school children in New Haven, he has been a community volunteer in Kazakhstan, and an English instructor in China. He plans to earn a graduate degree in philosophy at Oxford.
