Analysts: Cross-Strait Semiconductor Acquisitions to Come
UMC | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC, TPE: 2303) and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (TSMC, TPE: 2330) would see opportunities for their further expansion into the Mainland China semiconductor market if some changes were made in the Taiwan policies.
Upon a latest report, the mainland and Taiwan have reached initial agreements about their interactive investments and mutual opening of the semiconductor and flat panel markets, hopefully facilitating the above two companies to continue their uncompleted acquisitions in the mainland.
UMC and TSMC were formerly set to buy 85% of Hejian Technology (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. and 8% of Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (NYSE: SMI), respectively, but the transactions have been suspended due to Taiwan regulators' opposition.
Paying attention to the changes in Taiwan's rules, other local high-tech companies reportedly are also arranging their investments in the mainland, such as AU Optronics Corp. (TPE: 2409) and InnoLux Display Corp. (TPE: 3481), the two flat panel makers, according to insiders.
