UMC Arranges Green Energy Business in Mainland China

UMC | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Shandong Province has become the base area of United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC, TPE: 2303) for the expansion in the Mainland China green energy market, citing a report.

Sun Shougang, governor of Shandong's Jining City, visited UMC Chairman Emeritus Robert Tsao in Mid June 2009, about half a month before the Taiwan semiconductor maker agreed to invest in an LED project in the Jining High and New Technology Industry Development Zone and produce all the LED street lamps needed by the city.

UMC has engaged its 6-inch wafer factories in the LED epitaxy technology development and is building the LED factory in Jining, where a UMC-funded solar cell system factory is in construction, too.

During his visit to Shandong last week, UMC Chairman Stan Hung had a meeting with the Jining governor. Another mission of the chairman's trip is said to talk with Shandong SinoChip Semiconductors Ltd. about the two companies' cooperation in the mainland semiconductor market.
