Toyota, Nissan log 1st global output growth in 15 months
TM | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Co. said Friday that their global vehicle production in October saw the first year-on-year growth in 15 months on overseas output rises, while six other major Japanese carmakers reported drops.
Toyota's global output in the month expanded 1.4 percent from a year earlier to 709,904 units as overseas output rose 12.8 percent to 404,420 units. Nissan's global output rose 9.9 percent to 306,146 units as overseas production soared 16.0 percent to 207,025 units.
The growth followed a sharp vehicle output decline in October last year amid the global financial crisis. Growth was also attributed to expansion of the Chinese market.
Toyota's global sales increased 5.4 percent in October from a year earlier to 638,960 units, the first year-on-year rise in 15 months. Nissan's global sales expanded 9.8 percent to 286,624 units, the second consecutive year-on-year rise.
However, Honda Motor Co. reported its global output decreased 18.2 percent to 301,103 units.
Global production fell 29.6 percent at Mitsubishi Motors Corp., 17.8 percent at Daihatsu Motor Co., 12.1 percent at Mazda Motor Corp., 4.4 percent at Suzuki Motor Corp. and 2.4 percent at Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.
Nissan's domestic output decline was limited to 1.0 percent, while the other seven posted double-digit drops.
Five of the eight firms reported domestic sales increases, including Toyota with a 14.8 percent rise and Honda with a 16.6 percent gain.
All posted heavy export drops ranging from 15.3 percent for Nissan to 64.1 percent for Honda.
