Lodi Flames plan on returning to state cross country championships: Tokay's Haley Kroll also a strong bet to be back
KROL | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- After finishing 21st out of 22 Division I teams, the Lodi High girls cross country team left Saturday's state championships in Fresno satisfied that they had advanced to the state meet.
Perhaps they were content because they know there's a good chance they'll be back.
With all seven runners returning next year from a squad that was the first Lodi team to qualify for state, the Flames seem well positioned to return next year. And if so, Lodi coach Jeff Tillett says they won't be content just to be there.
"They really enjoyed the experience and had fun the entire weekend," Tillett said. "It was the biggest stage they've been on, and to an extent they ran like it was their first experience on that stage.
"We're kind of satisfied just that we met the goal of getting there. But they're ready to go back next year. They've already started talking about the things they need to do to improve. They've had a taste and now they're hungry."
Cassidy Daley had the best finish for the Flames, finishing the 3.1-mile course at Woodward Park in 20 minutes, 42 seconds. She was followed by Sydney Olagaray (162nd, 20:52). Katie Westerterp (165th, 20:58), Xochitl Mellor (166th, 20:59), Brenley Noori (179th, 21:32), Carla Taylor (180th, 21:37) and Emily Highsmith (186th, 22:32).
Tokay High sophomore Haley Kroll made her first appearance competing as an individual and had a strong showing. She placed 94th out 194 runners with a time of 19:24. That was a new personal best for Kroll on a 3.1-mile course, eclipsing her old mark by three seconds.
It was the start of a busy weekend for Kroll, who competed with the Pacific United Track Club at the Junior Olympic national qualifier on Sunday in Reno.
Galt junior Kelsea Tiapon, making her second trip to state, placed 104th in Division III with a time of 19:55, two seconds behind last year's time.
Elliot's Megan Crutchfield capped her prep career with her third appearance at state. She finished 144th in Division V with a time of 23:42. Her teammate, Emily Buhrkuhl, competing in her first state meet, placed 153rd (153rd, 25:13).
