COMMUNITY NOTEBOOK: North County falls in Pop Warner playoffs
NCBH | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The West Bay Rams from near San Francisco beat the North County Wildcats from Clark County to win a berth in the Pop Warner football Super Bowl tournament.
The Rams won Saturday's Pee Wee Division II regional championship game 12-0. It was the only loss this season for the team of boys ages 9-11 from Battle Ground, Amboy, Yacolt and Hockinson. After winning the Southwest Washington Pop Warner title, the team won a regional semifinal game in Santa Clara, Calif., on Nov. 21.
Players for the North County Wildcats were: Curtis Stradley, Michael Spellacy, Dylan Terwilleger, Damon McMahon, Isaiah Smith, Max Randle, Eric Creamer, Riley Betcher, Noah Marsh, Noah Lamb, Tristan Bonife, Zach Harmon, Austin Adams, Jason Harmon, Gunner Talkington, Tommy Renfroe, Thomas Strassenberg, Liam Nabors, Blake Harris, Logan Hertner, Bradley Shier, Reed Thompson, Carter Rudisill, and Trevor Geiger. The team's coaches were: Jeremy Hertner (head coach), Troy Talkington, Brian Creamer, Ken Stradley, and Tom Strassenberg.
Mixed bowling tourney nears end
Three teams from the host lanes top the standings with one weekend remaining in the 38th Clark County Mixed Bowling Championships.
Twilight Zone, with a handicap-adjusted score of 2,830, leads the team competition, three pins better than Spare Parts. The tournament will conclude with bowling on Saturday and Sunday at Bailey's Classic Lanes.
Members of the Twilight Zone are Twila Brosseau, Janet Long, Steve Long, Sr., and Dale Shaw.
Brosseau and Shaw also paired up for doubles, and top those standings with a score of 1,473.
A total of 18 doubles teams and 11 four-player teams have participated in the tournament through two weeks. The tournament is for teams of two men and two women and doubles teams of a man and a woman.

Teen wins Salmon Creek Turkey Trot
Kyle Boe of Vancouver won the 10-kilometer Turkey Trot race along the Salmon Creek Trail on Thursday. The 16-year-old led a field of 205 runners to the finish line with a time of 35 minutes, 5 seconds. He was 51 seconds in front of fellow 16-year-old Ryan Cavola in the longer of two runs staged to benefit needy students.
Megha Doshi, 21, was the first woman to finish the 10-kilometer run. Her time was 40:10.
The 5-kilometer race was won by Grant Eldridge in 16:46. A total of 440 runners and walkers completed the 5-K event.
The Turkey Trot benefitted Principal's Checkbook, a program available to area public school principals to help students whose families are facing financial hardship.
Special Olympics bowling said success
Success was the theme of the day on Oct. 24 during the Southwest Special Olympics Bowling Tournament at Husted's Hazel Dell Lanes in Vancouver.
Gold medals were earned by 42 individuals from the Clark County Hi-Rollers and five members of the Vancouver Dolphins during the annual event, which drew about 250 participants from as far away as Gig Harbor.
The gold medalists have the opportunity to apply for a spot in the Special Olympics national bowling tournament, scheduled for July 2010 in Nebraska.
Individual gold medalists from the Clark County Hi-Rollers were: Alexander Ables, Chelsea Baxter, Fred Berthold, Jr., Jacob Blunt, Matthew Briggs, Erin Casey, Chad Cline, Anthony Coelho, Rosa Coelho, Chelsea Comeau, Holly Cook, Michael Cook, David Cralley, Jerrod Crowson, Carl Crusiar, Jake Dawson, Dennis Dole, Jr., Nathan Ellis, Cody Hellerud, Rebecca Johnson, Russ Jones, Maura Mahle, Melody Malik, Liz Malotte, Carrie Manning, Greg Martino, Larry Mathews, Nathan McKee, Doug McPherson, Lauren Milam, Tina Murphy, Grant Richard, Robert Schmitz, Angelina Schubothe, Scott Shivvers, Cheryl Simons, Ivan Soltero, Jason Sorenson, Samantha Spencer, Andrew Stekhuizen, Abigail Storm, CJ Zemp.
Earning gold medals with Unified Teams were Roger Carsey, Vicki Cook, Phillip Luke, Gordon McPherson, Hayden Scott, Jason Scott, Aaron Smith.
Vancouver Dolphins who won gold medals were Kevynn Janece Bogart, Don Brigham, David Brown, Laurie Featherly, and Rene Graham.
Silver medals went to 36 bowlers, and 20 others won bronze medals.

The Special Olympics basketball season starts this month. New athletes are welcome. Training is provided for all skill levels. There is no cost to participate. Free hoops clinic
The Clark College Penguin Athletic Club is staging a free basketball clinic and lunch for boys and girls ages 6 to 12 on Saturday at the O'Connell Center gymnasium, Clark men's basketball coach Mike Arnold and women's coach Nancy Boone will direct the clinic, and members of the Penguins basketball teams will run the drills.
The gym will open at 9 a.m. for registration and warm up. The clinic will begin at 9:30 a.m. The free lunch is at 10:30, followed by scrimmages for the Clark men's and women's teams.

Baseball facility opens in Hazel Dell
The Clark County Thunder Baseball Academy is celebrating the opening of its indoor practice facility in Hazel Dell on Saturday.
An open house is scheduled for 10 a.m. to introduce the facility, which includes a full Little League sized infield.
Saturday night, the academy will host a poker tournament to raise funds to buy equipment. The poker begins at 7:30 p.m. and is open to anyone 21 and older.
