A source close to the company told Sunday Vanguard, yesterday, that the pipeline fire was extinguished at about 14.51 hours by SPDC's fighters, who were mobilized to the site afresh Saturday morning after an abortive attempt, Friday, due to the swampy and difficult terrain of the area.
SPDC's Precious Okolobo, who confirmed that the fire was smothered yesterday afternoon, said that investigation into the cause and impact of the fire explosion would be concluded today.
It was not still clear what the number of casualties were as at the time of this report, as there were reports that some villagers came to remove the remains of their dead ones in the early hours of yesterday to forestall detection by security agencies.
Despite the repeated warnings by Delta State government and the Shell Petroleum Development Company, pipeline vandals who are making quick money from the sale of condensate, which is reportedly mixed with kerosene and other products, have continued to burst oil pipelines.
No fewer than 20 persons were killed in kerosene explosions in Delta State in the past three months following the activities of condensate thieves and some of the victims were still recuperating at the Central Hospital, Warri, General Hospital, Ughelli among other hospitals in the state.
The Joint Task Force in the Niger-Delta, headed by Brig.-Gen. Lawrence Ngubane and the commander of the NNS, Delta, Navy Captain Ojediran had since the explosions launched a war on oil bunkerers in the state but they remained adamant because of the money they get from the business.
