Invitations are starting to pop up for the latest business venture bearing the name of Fort Worth celebrity chef Tim Love.
This time it's something new to the area, called Z Market, and it's about to open in Terminal B at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport.
Long a Fort Worth favorite, Love gained national fame by winning the title as Iron Chef on the Food Network. He has also opened several restaurants across Cowtown, including Lonesome Dove, Duce and the Love Shack hamburger stand in the Stockyards.
Z Market, owned by the giant airport concessionaire HMSHost, is described as an "upscale convenience store" with fresh hot and cold fare. The stores are mostly found in travel stops along the East Coast.
Love will be providing specially crafted to-go items. They're mainly intended for travelers to grab and eat on the plane.
The Texana chef seems to be in good company. For a line of to-go sandwiches, Z Market has in the past attracted the help of another celebrity chef, Wolfgang Puck.
Local investor honored
J. Luther King Jr., who founded Fort Worth's Luther King Capital Management in 1979 and now oversees about $8 billion in assets for hundreds of clients, was recognized Saturday by the CFA Institute for his contributions to the investment profession.
King received the association's Daniel J. Forrestal III Leadership Award, which the group said is periodically presented to a person "who has championed the pursuit of excellence in professional ethics and standards of practice, and who has provided outstanding leadership in elevating the integrity and competence of the investment profession."
According to the CFA Institute, which describes itself as a worldwide association for investment professionals, Luther King Capital Management has about 420 clients, including pension plans, foundations, mutual funds and wealthy individuals.
King's financial career in Fort Worth started as a credit analyst at the former First National Bank of Fort Worth, now part of Bank of America.
In 1970, he left the bank to become senior investment officer managing mutual-fund assets at an investment firm, and after a second stint at an investment firm, started his own firm in March 1979, where he is chairman and chief executive.
According to an interview with the association's magazine in 2006, King said he turned down promotions that would have moved him to Los Angeles or New York, preferring to stay in Texas and launch a new firm. He described his startup as "pretty meager at first. We had 400 square feet, and card tables and folding chairs."
Today, it has about 55 employees. In 2002, the firm's donations allowed Texas Christian University, King's alma mater, to create the LKCM Center for Financial Studies.
Raise school cash behind the wheel
Weatherford High School boosters can raise money for the school today just by test-driving a new Ford.
Ford Motor Co. and its locally owned Weatherford dealership SouthWest Ford will donate $20 to the school for every driver who takes a short test drive in a new Ford today from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Cruise 4 UR School event will be held at the high school, 2121 Bethel Road.
Ford will contribute up to $6,000 to the school.
Bowling for charity
American Airlines employees are usually found crawling over airplane engines, guiding a jet to landing or hauling baggage at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport. But more than 230 area AA employees will be hitting the bowling lanes today at AMF in Irving at the "Wild West Bowl-a-Thon" to support Junior Achievement.
The airline's employees have formed 46 teams for the tourney, with names like the "mAAd cowgirls" and "I Can't Believe It's Not Gutter." The event raises money for Junior Achievement's economic education programs in Fort Worth and Dallas. Last year, American employees raised $27,000 and hope to earn even more cash this year.
